Media and Democracy

The Media and Democracy module attempts to equip delegates with an understanding of the fundamental role of media in the democratization of society and how the media should behave in aspiring democratic systems. The module also assesses the vitality of freedom of the press and expression and relates the same to the practices in various countries and contexts. Origin and practicality of the Media as the Fourth Estate will be presented as a point of debate and discussion. The module provides highlights on how the media contributes to enhancing citizens’ participation in various issues that matter to them.Through contents such as journalistic bias, delegates would be encouraged to discuss the role of framing, the impact of bias, and the current perceptions towards objectivity. Moreover, the module provides delegates with the opportunity to assess the impact of technology and the digital sphere on the functioning and governance of conventional democratic media. Finally, it introduces crucial media democracy-related crosscutting issues with regard to inclusion and representation, both in terms of access and diversification of contents covered by the media.
